"We have around 140 cowbells. They'll be available first come, first serve to Bullpen members.

Wear your Bullpen T-shirt and come over to the table (it should be fairly obvious what table it is... it'll be on the side you enter) to pick up your cowbell. We should also have the T-shirts there in case you need to pick yours up still. We might not be giving out T-shirts and cowbells during the game, but for sure before the women's game and in between games."

Library Web site Redesign (Please Vote!)

The Criss Library is currently in the process of redesigning its online presence. The UNO community is invited to participate in a survey to help the library determine what features and services are most desirable through the web. The survey is available at xander.unomaha.edu/uxSurvey.html.

“We’d like everyone possible to take this survey,” states Dean Steve Shorb. “This will give us a better idea on how our patrons interact with the Library web site, how we can make improvements, and better serve our public.”

Student Senate Cancels Meeting

The Executive Council of the University of Nebraska at Omaha Student Government Association announced at Noon that the December 6, 2007 Student Senate Session will be canceled. All business and appointments will be carried over to the next regularly scheduled meeting on January 24, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Dodge Room of the Milo Bail Student Center.

Executive Treasurer Gubbels commented that “this [the cancelation] will enable our students to attend vigils this evening for those who were lost in yesterday’s events.” CAO Sanden expressed concern for the stress level of the students considering the events at the Westroads Shopping Mall coupled with today’s weather and the stress of final examinations and holiday pressures. The council voted unanimously to cancel the meeting. The Student Government Association will be in recess beginning today until January 14, 2008.

I posted the information late last night, but I'll post it again. Marti Rosen-Atherton in the Counseling Center spoke with reporters from two TV stations last night about what UNO is providing to the community. She's smart and cares about what is going on with people in our city.

UNO Counseling Services Available to Public
In response to the tragedy at the Westroads Mall, the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) Counseling Center is available to the metropolitan community for counseling services or referral into the community.
The number for the UNO Counseling Center is 554-2409. The Center is located on the first floor on UNO’s Eppley Administration Building and is open at 8 a.m.

Mavs Spread it Out in Defeating Metro State, 69-56

Jill Wolf had a career-high 10 rebounds against Metro State

All 12 University of Nebraska-Omaha players scored to give the Mavericks a 69-56 victory over Metro State in the final game of the Downtown DoubleTree Classic Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.

Alyssa Green was the top scorer for UNO (6-1) for the third time this year with 14 points. Jill Wolf set a career high in leading the Mavs with 10 rebounds. Ashley Nelson scored 11 points, with Ellen Majewski and Cayla Hargrove scoring nine each.

UNO got off to a slow start, seeing the Roadrunners (3-3) jump out to a 10-2 lead. But a three-point play from Green got the Mavs rolling, going on a 16-4 run to take an 18-14 lead midway through the half. The shooting stayed consistent, as UNO took a 33-27 lead into the intermission.

The Mavs would extend the lead to as many as 22 points with 7:43 left in the game. Metro State made a late surge, but the margin was too much to overcome, as the Roadrunners could never get within less than 11 points.

Rae Bean scored 15 points off the bench for the Roadrunners, leading all players, with Anne-Marie Torp adding 14. Chelsea Williamson was the team’s top rebounder with six.

The Mavericks will be back in action Tuesday, hosting Peru State at 6 p.m.

Brett Reif
Non-traditional media, sculpture and installation are major areas of interest for Brett Reif. He typically works in automobile grease, Post-It notes, test tubes and plastic wrap. Recent work involves deep-frying objects and materials (from Barbie Dolls to phone books) to create installations. Originally from New Orleans, Reif received his B.F.A. degree from Loyola University in New Orleans and his M.F.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work has been exhibited at Spaces Gallery, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Buffalo Artist Studio, North Carolina Museum of Art, Ackland Museum in North Carolina and the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, MO.

UNO PR students hold Santa Paws to raise money for animal rescue
Pet owners have the opportunity to have their pooches’ picture taken with Santa Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 at the Bookworm in Countryside Village, 87th and Pacific streets.

“Santa Paws,” sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America chapter at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, takes place from noon to 3 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to Town and Country Humane Society, a non-kill shelter in Omaha.

“It was important to us to provide donations specifically to a non-kill shelter in town this year,” said Keegan Niederdeppe, a PRSSA member.

The photos can be purchased for $10 each. Monetary donations as well as donations of food and animal products will be accepted. For more information, contact event coordinator Bre Gehrken at bre.gehrken@unogateway.com.

UNO Counseling Center Event Rescheduled

The Test Anxiety Seminar has been rescheduled for Thursday, December 6 from 11:30 to 12:30 in the U Mo Ho Room of the MBSC. This free luncheon will focus on identifying test anxiety and managing its symptoms.

A Finals Week Preparation Seminar has been scheduled for Thursday December 13 from 11:30 to 12:30 in Dodge Room A. This free luncheon will focus on effective study habits, test taking tips, and managing anxiety.

UNO to Host Special "By the People: Dialogues in Democracy" Screening

A private screening of the soon to be nationally televised "By the People: Dialogues in Democracy 2007" has been set for Friday, Nov. 30, at UNO. The event will run from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Dodge Room.

NET Television filmed a local "By the People: Dialogues in Democracy" discussion on campus Oct. 14. More than 100 members of the community took part in the deliberations that focused on immigration issues. UNO faculty members who are part of the Difficult Dialogues Initiative served as moderators.

Annual Fall Scholastic Children's Book Fair Nov. 26-28

It's a book fair blizzard at the Criss Library. The campus community and public can visit the UNO Library Friends annual fall Scholastic Children's Book Fair Nov. 26-28 in Criss Library.

Books for children of all ages, young adult titles and adult favorites will be available for purchase. Donations for the Open World Mission and the One World Community Health Center will also be accepted.

The fair will be located on the main floor in the center aisle of Criss Library. Dates and times for the event are:

Student Art Event Set for Dec. 1 -- The Snip Show

The Organization for the Advancement of the Arts (OAA) will present “The Snip Show,” its 10th annual non-juried student art exhibition, Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Bemis Underground. The one-night only event runs from 7 p.m. to midnight.

The OAA is an entirely student-run organization at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). For the past ten years, it has sponsored an open-entry student show in the Omaha community to give young artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional environment.

“The Snip Show,” in addition to focusing attention on local studio art students, will feature poetry readings by UNO’s Writer’s Workshop students and live music by Lindsay Donovan, Alessi, Thunderpower!!! and Baby Walrus.

The Bemis Underground, located at 12th and Leavenworth, is handicapped accessible, free and open to the public.

Tickets for UNO's second-round playoff football game on Nov. 24 are on sale. Tickets are available at the Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse ticket office in the lobby or through TicketMaster.

UNO, 10-0, earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Northwest Region. Game time is at 1:05 p.m. Nov. 24 at Caniglia Field.

Tickets are $15 for reserved seats in the west stadium or $10 for adult general admission and $5 for student and senior (65-over) general admission in the east and north bleachers.

Cafe Internationale Offers Taste of the World

On Thursday, November 15, the UNO International Studies and Programs held Café Internationale, an open house in honor of UNO International Education Week. Mavs Defeat Augustana at North Central Volleyball Regional
DULUTH, Minn. -- Five Mavericks tallied double-figure kill totals as the University of Nebraska at Omaha defeated Augustana 3-1 (30-25, 16-30, 30-27, 32-30) in the first round of the NCAA II North Central Regional hosted by the University of Minnesota Duluth. Read more.

With the win, UNO improved to 17-8 on the season, registering its eighth-straight victory. The Mavericks, who avenged last season's first-round regional loss to the Vikings, will now meet top-ranked Minnesota Duluth at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

UNO rolled up their sleeves on Tuesday, November 13th in order to help with the Red Cross Blood Drive. Upstairs in the Milo Bail Student Center was the place to be. The room was full of students, faculty and staff when I stopped by. Some where enjoying their snacks while others where in the middle of being generous. Danelle Schlegelmilch, Communications and PR Specialist with the Red Cross, says that approximately 20% of their total blood donors come from high schools and colleges like UNO. Schlegelmilch also emphasized that young donors are crucial to help keep our local blood supply strong. So way to go UNO! Your help is much appreciated!

UNO Cadet Completes Army ROTC Leaders Course

UNO student Gregory Utter recently completed a U.S. Army ROTC Leaders Training Course in Fort Knox, Ky. By attending the course, Utter has now earned an automatic two-year fully funded scholarship.
“This is a great accomplishment for Cadet Utter,” said Major Dennis Murphy, who leads the Creighton University Military Science Program. The program has a partnership agreement which allows UNO students to get their degree through UNO and participate in Army ROTC at Creighton. “The course attracts people from around the nation. We are happy that we were represented.”
The Leaders Training Course takes place over four weeks and cadets learn about leadership and personal development. In addition to the scholarship, completing the course allows ROTC students the opportunity to get automatic credit for their first two years in their campus programs.

The Creighton/UNO ROTC program dates back to 1919 and has graduated and commissioned more than 2,300 officers. It enables students to complete their degrees while training to become United States Army officers in many different fields: Engineering, Criminal Justice, and others in the Arts and Science departments. Two-, three- and four-year full ride scholarship are available.

Educational Administration Abstracts is now available online to the UNO community through the UNO Criss Library covering management issues for all academic levels, early childhood through higher education. Formerly available in print only, this highly specialized index is now accessible through EBSCO providing indexing to such journals as Harvard Educational Review, Educational Administration Quarterly, and Intervention in School & Clinic.

“Our educational administration students are very busy professionals,” states Melissa Cast-Brede, Education Librarian, “having this index available online will make their research lives so much smoother.”

While Educational Administration Abstracts is primarily a bibliographic database, full text access to many of the journals is available through the library’s “Get Item” links in the database. For more information, please contact Melissa Cast-Brede at mcast@mail.unomaha.edu

And so I'm giving a speech tonight . . .

I don't give speeches often, but I'm helping out a friend here at UNO. The speech is at an academic letter event at Fremont High at 7 p.m. This draft came out of another speech (really, I don't give a lot of speeches) that I presented earlier this semester here on campus. Write about what you care about, right? I wrote about students and education and UNO.

It’s an honor to be here tonight. And a touch strange. I attended events like this as a student. And although I know I’m more than a couple of decades removed from high school, I don’t feel much different. Call it a touch of pretending, I guess. I still have my hair; I didn’t put on weight. A thank you to family genetics and to working out.
The bigger part of why at 39 that I’m still just a few steps removed, at least in my own head, from being a kid is working around young people, around students. It’s a privilege to be surrounded day in, day out by students. And our students at UNO are very much like you. Here comes the advertising part – please consider UNO. We have a lot to offer.
Let me explain why being around young people is absolutely a job perk for me. Students are amazing. And it’s really not just me – the culture we live and breathe points to a fascination with you. That fascination goes beyond the major movie releases that depend on your attendance; or the music you buy (or download, depending on the speed of your internet connection); or the clothes you wear or the latest slang. Or what websites you read.
The NY Times Magazine even had a special edition a month and half back – “The College Issue” that dives into just what it means to be 18ish to a young 20-something today—just slightly older than the students in this audience. My favorite headline from it—and it should be important to this crowd-- is simple. It’s also easier said than done. “Don’t Worry,” it reads. “Be Students.” I’ll come back to that at the end of this.
The reason I feel lucky in my job is because the future—a very hopeful, future—constantly smacks me over the head every day from every possible angle. You can’t help but watch students and see that nervous, earnest, sometime naïve, sometime brilliant energy. It gets so thick it bounces off walls. Our society understands that optimism, too, even if we don’t recognize it often enough in words.
Students remain--for me--refreshing, invigorating, exciting. In person and on Facebook. When I see students at UNO torturing themselves over an assignment, trying to catnap in the library surrounded by a stack of books, trying to balance (sometime desperately balance) work and school, I see a long line of young people I’ve known. And I’m willing to bet more than a few of your teachers here at the high school understand what I’m talking about.
For the seniors here tonight--future freshmen at UNO, I hope-- know this . . . if you care about the work—this experience is not just about being smart—but the craft of education, you’re going to do fine. Here’s a bit—a tiny bit of wisdom—I’ll credit myself with. Sweat makes hope grow.
The statistics UNO collects when students come here actually quantify hope and sweat. And while the following statistics are directly applicable to UNO, I think they remain true for Nebraska students in general.
Our fall Freshman Survey reports that, as a group, nearly 80 percent of UNO freshmen expect to take part in public or community service while in college; nearly 70 percent said they rank their drive to achieve as either above average or greater; and as far as intellectual and social self confidence, well, freshmen think a lot of themselves. Seniors in this audience probably do , as well. And I don’t think that’s bad. This room would completely skew those rankings higher and higher and higher. Honor students like high scores.
Our survey information also highlights that more than half of UNO students are the first in their family to go on for a bachelor’s degree. What’s more hopeful that that? And more than 90 percent of this year’s freshmen class expects to expand their understanding of diversity in classes here.
As a student, I met classmates not only from Afghanistan and Iran and Japan and Korea, but also Brooklyn, New York, and Blue Hill, Nebraska and North Omaha. I grew up in the suburbs south of the Omaha, a 20-minute drive from UNO. That drive opened up the city, the state and the planet to me. Whatever university of college you go to, please consider the importance connected to learning about the “other.” A semester away from Nebraska, even away from the United States, provides perspective that can’t be faked. The latest NY Times Education Life section (from last Sunday) put Study Abroad on its cover.
And here’s another statistic on sweat that everyone in this room knows. Who here has a job? If you don’t, you likely will in college.
More than 80 percent of freshmen surveyed planned to work their first semester; about half that number expect to work more than 20 hours a week. And our students work more as they go through college.
I was lucky. My first college job was an internship on the World-Herald’s sport desk as a copy editor. I learned to balance being on scholarship with a real-world work experience. Nothing is more real than asking a losing high school football coach required to call in a score why he lost and who from the other team was really, really good.
Today at UNO, you don’t see students balancing work and school and home as much as you overhear them. Cell phones do that. My final suggestion—please don’t call it advice--would be to spend at least a little more time with and on yourself as you move from the busy, engulfing experience of high school to the busy, engulfing experience of college. Reflection is hard for driven, motivated young people.
Study hard, work hard but everyone needs to figure out the classic things students have been figuring out in some way shape or form forever. College is the time and place in life you find out which writers and words will stay with you; where you get larger and larger sense of self-reliance not only from completing classwork, but paying the rent on time and doing your own laundry; and where you get to experiment with belief and thought. And sometimes figuring those things out means being a touch lazy on a pretty day with friends. I can’t advocate for cutting class on a perfect afternoon in April . . . but I understand.
My favorite author from my young adulthood passed on this year. I never was required to read Kurt Vonnegut for a class but I devoured his books one after the next. I’ll leave you with this – “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.” It’s from a book called Mother Night. Like I mentioned at the start of this -- a little part of me gets to pretend that I’m in my early 20s when I step onto a campus filled with young people. I said this at the start, too, being among students, among you, is a privilege. Thank you.

UNO will make its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Division II soccer tournament, facing Truman State in the first round Friday at Winona, Minn., in the Central Regional. The winner will advance to a Sunday match with host Winona State. Game times will be announced later.

Pink Perspective -- a student report from the Mav Stampede

The Maverick hockey game that took place on October 19 was unlike any other Maverick hockey game. Yes, our team played phenomenally, as always. And yes, we defeated our opponent, with the final score being UNO 8 and Manitoba 1. But there was something different...and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Oh wait. Could it be that the UNO Mavericks were clad in pink jerseys?

Yes, I said pink!

UNO teamed up with Mutual of Omaha and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.

Not only were the Mavericks dressed in stylish pink jerseys, but representatives from the UNMC and the Methodist Cancer Center were also stationed outside the arena handing out important information on breast cancer to passing Maverick fans.

Parking info for UNO vs. USD (GO MAVS!)

Thursday night's football game at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) against the University of South Dakota will cause some parking changes on campus. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and fans are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.
The parking change information:
• The top two levels of the UNO parking garage will be available to people coming to the football game. The gates will be open and the public will be able to park free of charge starting at 4 p.m. The bottom level of the garage will be reserved for people coming to evening classes.
• Fans from South Dakota have a designated tailgate area in Parking Lot 6 on the Pacific location campus. Shuttle buses will take USD fans from the lot to the stadium and back again after the game.
• UNO fans can also park on the Pacific location campus and use shuttle buses. Shuttle bus service will begin at 5 p.m. and run until 11 p.m.
• Faculty and staff can also use the Pacific location for parking and use the shuttles to come to the game or classes. The Crossroads shuttle is available only until 6 p.m.
• Half of parking lot Q--just to the west of the Fieldhouse--will be shut down on game day due to parked equipment, television trucks and other logistic needs connected to the broadcast of the game on CSTV.
Extra officers from UNO Campus Security and from the Omaha Police Department will help direct traffic and will be on hand both near the stadium and on the Pacific location campus. The UNO Athletic Department expects 7,000 to 9,000 fans at the game.

Pirates and Mermaids and Penguins, Oh My!

All Hallow's Eve is upon us yet again. Candy, costumes, kids and trick-or-treating. Usually one must wait until nightfall to enjoy all the holiday has to offer, but not at UNO. At about 9:30 this morning, the kids from the care center paraded across campus in their Halloween best, collecting candy from staff members throughout campus. Among them I found Captain Jack Sparrow, Thomas the Train, Cookie Monster, firemen, princesses, mermaids, penguins, spiders, Spiderman, and Batman; all collecting as much candy as their tiny hands could carry.

Beth McGill was all-everything at UNO. Now, she's working for a nonprofit organization--Grassroots Soccer--in Africa for a year. She's keeping a blog and it's definitely worth checking out.

STREET LEAGUE

Sitting on the car when I was smothered by street league kids

Street leagues are the one Grassroot Soccer program where we play soccer. Street League programs take several weeks because they only run once a week and instead of teaching curriculum the entire session, half the session is used to play soccer. I love the street leagues because it gives the trainers and myself a chance to really connect with the children through soccer. Before and after the session I just hit the ball around with the kids and they laugh when the Mlunglu (white person) trips over the ball. Kids at street league are great. In street leagues the kids come to us not because we are scheduled during their school time but because they want to be there.

UNO to offer reduced tuition rates to western Iowa students

Starting next fall, the University of Nebraska at Omaha will offer reduced tuition rates to western Iowa students who previously had to pay full out-of-state tuition.

The new program, called the Metropolitan Advantage, will allow residents of Pottawattamie, Mills and Harrison Counties in Iowa, an area with a population of 120,000, to attend undergraduate and graduate programs at UNO for 150 percent of in-state tuition.

In the fall of 2006, UNO drew only 274 students from those counties, which are considered by the U.S. Census Bureau to be part of the Omaha metropolitan area.

The new tuition figure, while higher than in-state students from Nebraska pay, will be close to the in-state rates charged by the University of Iowa, Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa, NU officials said.

“ We had heard that they were in need of food at the food banks and we wanted to give back to the community” said UNO cheer sponsor Patty O’Dell.

UNO Records Second-Straight Upset
Mavs Sweep No. 12 Minnesota State

OMAHA -- For the second consecutive night, the University of Nebraska at Omaha upset a ranked team, sweeping No. 12 Minnesota State, Mankato 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-22) Saturday night in North Central Conference volleyball action before 786 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse.

The Mavericks, who outlasted 13th-ranked Augustana in five games on Friday night, moved into second place in the NCC standings and are now 14-8 overall and 6-4 in league play. Minnesota State fell to 17-7 and 5-4.

Why I've been more than a little scattered . . .

. . . is due to a very cool, but very involving road trip set for Friday. The chancellor and a lot of the deans and vice chancellors are heading out for West Point, Norfolk and Columbus -- A, B, C -- over one long day. I've been organizing the event from place to place to place.

Even with all the work involved, this is an important (and hopefully) fun trip to make. We're going to be meeting community members and talking with high school students, and that's always a good thing. Hope I can post from the road.

Health Fair at UNO Brings Out Organizations, People

The 2007 UNO Health Fair took place on Thursday, October 18 in the Milo Bail Student Center. The event was hosted by Student Health Services and the Wellness Stampede and was open to all UNO students, faculty, staff and their families.

We know what you’re thinking: “Health Fair? Sounds boring!” Well, we’re pleased to tell you that the event was far from boring. There were over 35 organizations there-from Alegent Health to Walgreens to MADD-packed with valuable information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If that’s not enough, the organizations also gave away loads and loads of freebies, including pens, coasters, cold-care packages, bottles of water and door prizes.

The UNO Health Fair also offered a number of services to all individuals such as screenings, $22 health screen blood draws, $12 PSAs for men and chair massages. Yes, we said chair massages.

Bummed you missed out on the 2007 UNO Health Fair? Don’t worry, guys…there’s always next year.

University Library Friends Meets Nov. 8

"University Library Friends will discuss the book “The Shia Revival” by Vali Nasr at noon Thursday, Nov. 8 in Dodge Room A at the Milo Bail Student Center.

Tom Gouttierre, dean of International Studies and programs and director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies, will lead the discussion, which is free and open to the public.

In his book Nasr examines how conflict and instability in Iraq have shaken the balance of power between Sunni and Shia. Nasr is a professor of Middle East and South Asia politics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

The discussion of “The Shia Revival” is part of a series of book discussions that occur through the school year.

Pike Spike set for Oct. 21

"Attention all UNO students:

Pi Kappa Alpha will be hosting an event this coming Sunday, October 21 called Pike Spike. It is a philanthropic event to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be a volleyball tournament held at Digz Volleyball Center in Millard. Teams will consist of 6-8 team members with a registration fee of $50 per team due the day of the tournament. There will be a “competitive” and a “out-for-fun” bracket with prizes being awarded to champions of both brackets. Breakfast will be provided the day of the tournament and there will also be a raffle with awesome prizes.

Once again the tournament will take place at Digz Volleyball Center, which is located off 144th and L Street. Since it is indoor we will play rain or shine. Sign in will be at 2:00 Sunday with the first game starting at 2:30. All you need to do to sign up is to email Joel Wallace at jjwallace@mail.unomaha.edu with both your team name and the names of the people participating. CALL FOR PLAYS FOR
UNO THEATRE’S
NU WAYS/NU WORKS FESTIVAL

The Department of Theatre at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is seeking ORIGINAL SCRIPTS for the NU Ways/NU Works Festival, February 28—March 1, 5—8. Selected plays will be produced in repertory as part of the festival event. Play submissions must be received by November 19, 2007.

Submission Guidelines for Plays:

• Playwrights may submit multiple works (up to three scripts).
• Plays’ running times must not exceed sixty minutes.
• A completed script must be submitted (scenes from longer works will not be considered).
• Scripts must be typed, double-spaced.
• Due to the nature of the festival, playwrights are encouraged to submit plays with limited technical components. (Plays that can be performed on a bare, or nearly bare, stage are encouraged.)
• Hard copies will not be returned unless accompanied by a SASE.

How to Submit Plays:

Jansen Named NCC Defensive POW

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Kayla Jansen has been named the North Central Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in last Saturday's 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-24) sweep over visiting North Dakota.

Jansen finished the match with 26 digs (8.67 dpg) and one service ace as the Mavericks improved to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in league play.

Nebraska-Omaha will hit the road for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Upper Iowa on Tuesday night, Oct. 16, in Fayette, Iowa.

Mavs to Wear Pink Jerseys to Open Season;
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Omaha— The University of Nebraska at Omaha Maverick hockey team will be smart, agile, aggressive and wearing pink when they take to the ice to open their home season with the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Oct. 19 and 20.
The Mavericks have joined forces with Mutual of Omaha and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization (Nebraska Affiliate) to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month by raising awareness and funds for cancer research at the Qwest Center during the Mavs’ first two home games.
The Mavericks will be wearing pink jerseys when UNO takes the ice against Manitoba in the opening game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Friday, Oct. 19, at 7:05 p.m.
In addition to sponsoring the Mavs’ season-opening tournament, Mutual of Omaha will contribute $10,000 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization. Fans will also be able to bid on the unique pink Maverick jerseys at a silent auction to be held during the Stampede games and representatives from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Methodist Cancer Center will be on hand during the games to hand out life-saving information on breast cancer.
The Mutual of Omaha Stampede kicks off at 4:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, when Canisius takes on Alabama-Huntsville in the opening game. UNO faces Manitoba in the other first-round game at 7:05 p.m.
“This is something special, something important,” said UNO Maverick Head Coach Mike Kemp. “We think this is a great opportunity for our fans to get involved and we are looking forward to see what we can raise through our silent auction.”
“It will be an amazing sight when the Mavericks hit the ice wearing their pink jerseys,” said Mutual of Omaha Senior Vice President John Hildenbiddle. “Mutual of Omaha is thrilled to join forces with the Mavericks and the Komen organization in the fight against breast cancer.”
The jerseys will be given to the auction winners at the conclusion of the Saturday, Oct. 20, Maverick game.
In addition to the auction, Mutual of Omaha and UNO Hockey are challenging all Maverick fans to donate $5 for every goal that the Mavs score during the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. Collection sites will be available at various locations in the concourse area of the arena throughout the tournament. Checks can be made payable to UNO and sent to UNO Hockey, 6001 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE 68182.
At the UNO Maverick Hockey game with Michigan on Friday, Nov. 2, a check for all the funds raised at the Mutual of Omaha Stampede will be presented to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nebraska. WOWT anchor Tracy Madden will take part in the event.

Global Diplomats Needed;
Applications Available at International Studies
Omaha - UNO International Studies and Programs (IS&P) will take applications from UNO students through the end of October for a new program, Global Diplomats.
Starting in January, students selected as Global Diplomats will assist IS&P in a variety of ways through next May or August. Some possible activities include promoting campus internationalization efforts, assisting with orientation, giving campus tours, attending and assisting at social events, making airport pickups and offering settling-in assistance and shopping help to international guests. Ten students will be selected for the program.
Criteria for selection will include:
Academic excellence in at least two full-time semesters earned at UNO by December 2007 and maintenance of a 2.5 GPA;
Full-time student status in the 2007/2008 school year;
Strong leadership and communications skills and strong interest in service to UNO and the international student population;
And experience in cross-cultural settings.

Selected students will wear UNO IS&P Global Diplomats polo shirts to events and will receive a $100 scholarship for the spring 2008 semester. Applications may be picked up at the front desk in 241 Arts and Sciences Hall. Application must be returned by 31 October. UNO Broadcast Society Bowling Night By Linsey Carsey
UNO's chapter of the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) decided that for one night, the "B" in NBS should stand for bowling. And bowl they did. Approximately a dozen members of the organization congregated at West Lanes on a Friday to knock down some pins.

NBS is a student organization whose mission is to assist the transition from college student to electronic media professional. Its a way to sharpen your skills in the field, and make contacts in the broadcasting industry. Members are typically broadcasting or journalism majors, but anybody interested is welcome to join.

Other upcoming events for NBS are a regional conference toward the end of the month in Des Moines, IA, and a possible trip to the national conference in Anaheim, CA. Anyone interested in becoming a member of this student organization, should contact Linsey Carsey (Lcarsey@mail.unomaha.edu) or Dr. Chris Allen.

UNO Theatre Presents “Art” by Yasmina Reza

The UNO Department of Theatre will present the Tony Award-winning play “Art” by Yasmina Reza, adapted by Christopher Hampton and directed by Cindy Melby Phaneuf, starting this weekend. There will be a preview performance tonight, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Performances run Oct. 12-13 and Oct. 17-20. All performances will be held at the UNO Theater in the Weber Fine Arts Building. The house opens at 7 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. curtain for all evening performances. An interactive talk-back session with the director, designers, and cast will follow the Friday, Oct. 19, show.

The plot of the play revolves around the purchase of an expensive white painting and how the controversial piece of art drives a rift between three friends. Translated and produced in more than 23 languages, this witty smash hit by Yasmina Reza will delight and entertain, according to the theatre departnement’s press release.

Race For The Cure: Sunday, October 7, 2007

Over 13,000 participants took part in the 5k and 1 mile races. Athletes at all levels took part to challenge themselves and raise funds to help fight breast cancer. All proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation , which is dedicated to eradicating breast cancer through research, education, screening programs, and treatment.

The event coincides with October's designation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and raises funds to support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. Of the money raised, 75% remains in our community to support breast cancer programs such as the Omaha Breast Health Fund and the Every Woman Matters program. The remaining 25% benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is dedicated to eradicating breast cancer through research, education, screening programs, and treatment.

Race for the Cure is a community event in which several UNO student organizations take part. Some of the groups involved: Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Theta Chi Fraternity, and the local PRSSA chapter.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure began 25 years ago when Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever, according to organization's Web site.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grass-roots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find cures, according the Komen Web site.

The UNO Library might be under construction, but there's alway great things going on. Here's a library update --

Renovation:
First floor construction began late spring and continues to progress. Anticipated opening is late Spring, 2008.
Service desks are open and ready to assist you in all your information needs. The Library Café hours are from 7 am to 9 pm M-TH, 7 am – 4 pm F, and 2 pm – 9pm Sundays. The Garden Area is open daily until dusk, unless there is inclement weather.

Periodicals are in offsite storage. Many full text articles are available, Articles will need to be requested through Interlibrary Loan if full-text access is not available. Library personnel are available to help you locate your articles. Current Periodicals and Newspapers are available and are located on the first floor, Kahn Addition.

Important Collection Notes:
CDs are currently being assigned call numbers so that they will fall into topical groupings. The CDs with newly assigned call numbers are in the new wooden browsing cabinets. The CDs that have not yet received their call numbers are still in the old metal cabinets along the wall, filed by accession number (the order in which they were received). When you look up a CD in the catalog, if it has a call number beginning with “M” it will be in the browse racks. If it has a very short call number beginning with “CD” it will be in the metal cabinets. Please see a service desk for assistance in locating your favorite music choices.
Videos and DVDs are now classified as “media collection” in the catalog, but they’re still on the same shelves you’re used to.
Audio-Visual materials from the third floor stacks will soon be integrated into the media collection.

Clickers
Clickers have been added to the library classrooms. Library instructors will use this exciting technology to encourage participation and to check the student’s progress and understanding during class time. Clickers are provided by the library.

Fall Tuition and Fees Due Oct. 9

The final balance for fall tuition and fees is due Tuesday, Oct. 9. Payments can be made in person, mailed to Cashiering/Student Accounts in 109 Eppley Administration Building or completed online at http://cashiering.unomaha.edu/.

Cashiering/Student Accounts will remain open Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Payments can also be placed in the drop-box, located at the north end of the Cashiering/Student Accounts Office, which is accessible from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Note: Mail-in payments must be received in Cashiering/Student Accounts by the due date to avoid late payment fees. Professionals Provide Expert Opinions at UNO Ethics Forum

On Thursday, September 27, communication students were given an inside look at the world of PR at an ethical forum titled “The Blame Game: Staying Ethical During a PR Crisis.” The forum was sponsored by the UNO School of Communication and the Public Relations Student Society of America. The forum had three experienced panelists: Annie Haas, ConAgra Foods corporate communications manager; William Ramsey, veteran PR professional and owner of Ramsey Public Relations; and Elizabeth Weiss, corporate communications officer at Omaha Steaks. The three individuals gave the audience their thoughts and experiences on a number of important PR issues, including:

How to save face after a crisis, changes in handling PR crises over time;
Opinions on the finger-pointing strategy;
How one should establish a good, trustworthy relationship with his or her clients;
The Virginia Tech incident; and
The banning of bake sales by the university

Mobile Museum to Visit UNO Library on Friday
The mobile museum, "Behind Barbed Wire: Midwest POWs in Nazi Germany," will be parked near UNO Criss Library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5.

This unique traveling exhibition is displayed inside a renovated school bus. Photographs and other war-related memorabilia explore the experiences of Midwest prisoners of war. Visit http://www.traces.org/buseum.html for additional details about the "Behind Barbed Wire" exhibit.

While the mobile museum will be on campus for just one day, the library also has another ongoing World War II exhibit on its main level. "Homeland Morale to Homeland Security: Original WWII Posters," features posters issued by the Office of War Information during the war. The posters display will remain of display through Nov. 18.

You already know about the Invisible Children. Schools for Schools is a campaign of Invisible Children. Its goal is to raise money for schools in northern Uganda.

The thing the parents of these displaced want most for their children is education. With education, these children will become the future leaders of their country. IC is promoting their campaign with a tour promoting it.
They will be at UNO on Wednesday Oct. 3rd at Noon in the Nebraska room of the UNO student center. Come learn about UNO's efforts to raise money for this cause. The UNO students will figure out what can be done to raise money that will go to water, teacher, books, buildings, and technology.

Mavs Picked Sixth in Pre-Season CCHA Poll

DETROIT, Mich. – The Maverick hockey team was picked to finish sixth in the 12-team Central Collegiate Hockey Association in pre-season polls by the league coaches and the news media, while defensemen Juha Uotila and Eddie Del Grosso were named to the CCHA honorable mention preseason All-Conference team.

Gateway sponsors student government debate Wednesday

Omaha – The University of Nebraska at Omaha's (UNO) student newspaper, the Gateway, will sponsor its annual debate between candidates for the position of student president/regent Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Milo Bail Student Center Fireside Lounge at 11:30 a.m.

The debate will be between president/regent candidates Margaret (Meg) Mandy and Lucas Seiler. Their running mates, Sheena Kennedy and Buey Ruei respectively, will also participate in the event.

Mandy is currently a senator from the College of Arts and Sciences and serves as the chair of Student Government's Student Affairs Committee. Seiler is currently a senator from the College of Information Science and Technology.

UNO's student president/regent is one of four students who serve in an advisory capacity on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. The student regents are non-voting members of the board as prescribed by the Nebraska Constitution Article VII, Section 10. UNO's current student president/regent is Alexander Williams, who was elected last year and is not seeking reelection.

The debate will focus on a variety of issues on the Omaha campus, including fiscal responsibility, student fee allocations, proposals for a campus-wide smoking ban, increasing student involvement and expanding student rights.

The candidates' qualifications, platforms and performance in the Student Senate last session will also be discussed during the debate and closing statements.

As a new addition to the debate this year, KBUL MavRadio, UNO's student radio station, will broadcast the event live throughout the student center and via podcast.

Anyone interested in hearing the debate live can visit myspace.com/mavradio and click on the link there or can download the playlist at 137.48.50.110:8000/listen.pls at 11:30 a.m. Users will need either iTunes or Winamp to listen to the broadcast.

An audio file of the debate will be made available on the Gateway's Web site, www.unogateway.com, on Wednesday afternoon.

Need a video camera for a multi-media production? Want to watch yourself giving a speech? Criss library has made three Sony Handycam video cameras and tripods available for use outside of the library to all current UNO Faculty/Staff/and Students. The cameras have a three day loan period and can be renewed if no one is waiting for one to be returned. The cameras are equipped with a camera bag, manual, USB cable, and A/C adapter. An accessory pack is also available for checkout with a remote control, remote microphone, wireless receiver, and A/V cables.

“We are eager to offer this opportunity to the UNO Faculty, Staff, and Students. We’re hopeful this will help to accommodate a much needed service,” states Doug Loewens, Day Circulation Supervisor.

Mavericks Back Home, Host UND Friday

The Mavericks return home after a three-week absence to host North Central Conference rival North Dakota Friday at 4 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field, 68th and Spring Streets.

UNO, 2-4 on the season overall and 1-1 in the NCC, will be facing a team that has been its toughest opponent in the conference. While the Mavericks lead the overall series, 10-4, the advantage is just 5-4 over the past nine meetings.

North Dakota, 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCC, owns 3 of the Mavericks’ 10 all-time league losses. Prior to this season, UND is the only team to hand UNO a league loss in from 2002-2005.

UNO has won three straight vs. the Fighting Sioux, all by shutouts.

The Mavericks are coming off a 3-0 setback at Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday. That followed UNO’s NCC-opening 1-0 win at Minnesota Duluth last Saturday. Casey Bigsby scored her first goal of the year and seventh of her career and goalkeeper Ellen Petersen earned her first shutout of the season for the Mavericks.

Coach Don Klosterman has a 145-31-6 career mark in nine seasons at UNO and is 10-4 vs. North Dakota...the match vs. North Dakota is the first of five straight at home for UNO, which will next host St. Cloud State on Sept. 29 and Minnesota State on Sept. 30...Dani McCawley leads the Mavericks in scoring with four goals and eight points...UNO has outshot opponents 92-53 on the season.

Celebrate Constitution Day at the Criss Library on Monday, Sept. 17, when Carson Holloway, assistant professor of political science at UNO, presents “Executive Privilege and the Constitution.” The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public.

“We're honored to have Dr. Holloway speak to us on this timely topic,” said Jim Shaw, government documents librarian. “Consitution Day gives us a great opportunity to examine meaningful political issues and hold great discussions relevant today.”

During 2005-06, Holloway was a William E. Simon Visiting Fellow in Religion and Public Life in Princeton University’s James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. His books include All Shook Up: Music, Passion, and Politics and The Right Darwin? Evolution, Religion, and the Future of Democracy. He is currently at work on a book on the thought of John Paul II and modern political philosophy, which will be published by Baylor University Press.

Fall Leadership Conference Set for Oct. 13
The UNO Fall Student Leadership Conference will feature a slate of topics important to current or future student leaders on Saturday, Oct. 13. UNO Student Organizations and Leadership Programs (SOLP) has arranged the day around a nationally-known leadership consultant from the High Impact Training organization.

All UNO students, whether involved in a campus or community organization or not, are welcome to attend, said Shayna Royal, the UNO Emerging Leaders coordinator. The consultant from High Impact, Tracy Knofla, has nearly 20 years of speaking experience and often presents in front of higher education and non-profit audience.

“Our theme of ‘Make Your Impact’ speaks to the concerns and hopes of student leaders,” Royal said. “In addition to practical suggestions, we also expect a very positive, very interesting discussion.”

Topics expected to be covered at the conference:
• Facilitating “Difficult Dialogues;”
• Helping organization members “get it;”
• Building networks of student leaders
• Utilizing channels of command to address concerns; and
• Learning effective means to get goals accomplished

The William H. and Dorothy L. Thompson Alumni Center will host the event, which runs from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. The cost to attend is $20 and include meals, a t-shirt and conference materials. Heard about a new Internet-based show that will be starting up in early November that's being put together by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the creators of "My So Called Life." That show was smart, entertaining and rang dead-on true. (Or I'm just remembering it fondly.)

At any rate, Quarterlife.com is supposed to be about being in your 20s in this day and age. The site is also building in a social networking componenet, too. Might be interesting . . . might fall on its face (and that might be interesting, too.)

The game on Saturday night goes down as one of the best in my memory. My family couldn't find a place in the stand and we camped out with friends on the hill on the northeast corner of the stadium.

The atmosphere at Caniglia just rocked. The band sounded great, the student section looked to be having a great time, and the fans from Northwest Missouri State were as classy as I remember. (And I know there was more than a little jawing going back and forth between the student sections of the schools, but, hey, that's part of college football . . . and the scoreboard ultimately says it all.)

OMAHA, Neb. -- Three Mavericks hit .400 or better as the 16th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team swept No. 23 Wayne State 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-21) before a season-high 1,436 fans Wednesday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse.

The Mavericks were led by sophomore Ellen Thommes who hit .542 with 14 kills, only one error in 24 attempts, while adding a match-high six blocks. Sophomore Kelli Goeser was also in double figures with 10 kills.

Marching band students are just flat out great. They're dedicated, talented and involved.
